What's your favorite Mickey Newberry song?
Q. Again prompted by Luckenbach Texas. Either one that he recorded, or just one that he wrote. Right now I think mine is: The Future Ain't What it Used to Be

A. Interesting question because I realized I didn't know that much about the man. I remember a sad song he did called She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye. I just read his bio and found this quote that really got my attention. No wonder he's in the songwriter's hall of fame. Kris Kristofferson says, God, I learned more about songwriting from Mickey than I did any other single human being. To me he was a songbird. He comes out with amazing words and music... I m sure that I never would have written Bobby McGee, Sunday Morning Coming Down... if I had never known Mickey. He was my hero and still is.
